He Came To Jesus By Night

Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews….came to Jesus by night. — John 3:1-2.

Nicodemus is a unique figure in the Gospel. First he comes to Jesus under the cover of darkness to question him. Next, he is urging his colleagues to give Jesus a trial in accordance with the law, and finally Nicodemus helps Joseph to care for the body of Jesus.

He is described as a disciple, but he is one only under the cover of night and his questions and actions seem to be filled with doubt and fear.

Perhaps many of us are more like Nicodemus than we’d like to admit. Our relationship with God is filled with uncertainty and doubt, and we only engage God in a conversation “by night.” Like Nicodemus we perceive depth and truth in Christ’s message, but we only speak of our attraction in the shadows.

A good question to ask ourselves during prayer and meditation is what will it take me to come out from under the cover of night and into the light?
