My Yoga instructor told me a story this morning. It seems a wealthy woman traveled to Burma to learn how to meditate at a very famous Buddhist temple. Her daily regimen including lots of walking, then sitting, then more walking. Her Master told her through an interpreter that meditation is essentially a detoxing of the mind.
For the first few days she went along with the regimen, but after a few days she was getting frustrated — there were no words of great wisdom, no secret mantra, only walking and sitting. So through the interpreter she told the Head Master she wanted to go home, how was she supposed to learn meditation by simply walking and sitting?
The Head Master replied, “Bend Over, Pull Up Your Socks, And Keep Moving.”
This story reminded me of a question I once asked my basketball coach. “How do I learn to be a great free throw shooter?” His response, “By shooting free throws.”
Much in our life is learned by practice, practice, and practice. How do we learn to live through crisis after crisis until it seems we can no go further?
By bending over, pulling up one’s socks, and keep on moving through life.
