Breathe To Slow Down The Heart

In addition to trying with little success to stretch and pull all of the knots out of my back and legs this  morning’s yoga instruction included some work on my breathing. My instructor told me that when I slowed down my breath, I also slowed down my heart.

A lot of good things happen when we step down the pace of our heart and breath.

The same is true with our life. When the whole world seems to be picking up its pace, one of our tasks is to slow ourselves down. We become more aware of our surroundings, we listen more attentively, and we see more clearly.

So many people seem to race through life, but what happens at the finish line? I have a wonderful friend who on several occassions ran the marathon in Greece. The race follows the same path as the original marathon. He told me that one year he had the slowest time of all the participants who finished, but then he would laugh and say, “You know the people in the back of the pack are much more interesting than those in the front.”

Some of the most fascinating and interesting people I know may move a little slower than they once did, but they are still in the race. Isn’t that the point?
