…were we to love none who had imperfections, this world would be a desert for our love. — Thomas Jefferson
It seems there is so much emphasis today on everyone’s imperfections and failings. When I was in politics, it was called a “gotcha mentality.” It has gone way past politics these days.
A celebrity falls and breaks a bone, the question isn’t is he or she alright, but was he drunk or she on drugs. And this game of gotcha permeates all of our society. A child can’t just fall of her bike without their being a defect in the bike, or crack in the pavement that someone didn’t fix. As an aside, I didn’t own a pair of pants that didn’t have patches on my knees from some form of bicycle mishap including when my friend, Bill Wagner, and I jousted with long sticks while riding our bicycles.
I don’t have a cure, but I can offer a suggestion. We refuse to participate. When someone’s imperfections become the latest nationwide or neighborhood scandal remind yourself and anyone who will listen that no one is perfect, and focus on the good that the latest victim of the gotcha game has done or did.
If you do, at least your desert will become a garden, and you will have brought a flower into the world instead of more mud.
