I Break A Lot Of Windows

While I was playing catch this weekend with my grandson, Allen, I asked him what happened to the window pane that was covered with plywood. After telling me it was an errant baseball throw, he said in that wonderful honesty of youth, “You know Webb, I break a lot of windows.” Something his mother confirmed with a laugh when I told her.

Allen, didn’t quite understood when I responded, “So have I. I’ve broken a lot of windows, too.”

I think if truth be told we have all broken a lot of windows in our lives, literally and figuratively. Most of them not intentional, but broken nonetheless.

“It happens,”  whether it’s a window, a crystal vase, or a relationship. But just like the window pane, relationships once broken can be repaired, maybe not with a plywood patch, but with a little effort on our part, and a little bit of understanding that all of our lives are filled with errant throws, over exuberant rough housing, and inadvertent consequences.

Perhaps this world would be a lot better place if we all had a little bit more honesty and willingness to take responsibility like Allen, and a little bit more understanding like his parents, who understand that little boys and girls break a lot of windows, so do adults.

  1. Yes, it is a painful experience but we all break windows. Confessing was never a problem for me as a child but it gets harder as an adult. Some “pains” are not as easily repaired as windows and the damage goes far beyond physical impact. Patience, sincerity and honesty can help get a good result!

  2. I love this! (I break lots of windows, too). Really enjoying sitting in your pew.
