The triviality of the issue was inversely proportional to the rancor it can stir. — J. F. Riordan, Robert’s Rules.
My friend and author Jan Riordan states a truism in her newest novel. How often have our disputes at home, work, or on the playing fields been over the trivial. And as an aside, our politics issues have gravitated to the trivial rather than the important. I know for myself the smallest of matters can tick me off much more than major incidents in my life. A mosquito is a much bigger irritant than the garbage truck blocking the highway.
Our spiritual and faith lives also get bogged down with the trivial. The woman in the big hat who blocks our view, or the off key choir member become the subject of discussion more than the words from the pulpit. We look for what is wrong with a certain faith rather than what is right and is the clearest path to God.
Yes, Jan’s truism is just that, but we must work hard to make it not so.
