Bonnie Smith Whitehouse in her classic, Afoot and Lighthearted, reports that Beethoven’s creative routine included a walk each day after lunch. It was a way for him to separate his work environment from his thinking environment.
As I sit at my desk, I look out onto our street and sidewalks. People pass all day walking their dogs, walking to the grocery store, accompanying their young kids on their bikes or scooters, or merely out for a stroll. Whatever their purpose, their bodies and souls are being refreshed and inspired. Even if the stroll is only for a few minutes or long enough for their dog to do their business, it is way to get away from the bombardment of all the noise that is in our home or workplace.
It is also the perfect opportunity to communicate with God. One of the greatest negatives about modern and busy lives is the lack of time for ourselves and God. Give it a thought. What if God called you on your iPhone and asked, “can you go for a walk?” Who would pass up that opportunity? Yet, I do that very thing every day I don’t get up from my chair and take a stroll. My bad!
