And whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave: just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve. — Matthew 10:27-28.
You may remember this passage in a different way — whoever is first must be last, and whoever is last shall be first. Either way this passage reminds me of a few months ago when the virus first hit. While we were sheltering in place a health care professionals, grocery workers, garbage workers, plumbers and electricians, etc. were braving the virus to “serve.”
We realized how much we needed basic services, we supported they being paid living wages, be given bonuses, and we held parades for them. But it seems as we ventured out with our masks our appreciation waned. Their service has been forgotten.
As the anniversary of our nation is about to be celebrated it is prudent of us to once again celebrate the least of us who became first in the beginning of our crisis. Our freedom is dependent on those who serve, not on those who wish to be served.
