Breath and Life

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about breath being a metaphor for life. Here is the meditation I mentioned. Not a bad way to begin one’s day at all:

Ajahn Thanasanti (Meditation on Breath)

We have arrived in present moment. Allowing this time to go inward. (pause)

Letting the feet connect to the floor, allowing the spine to relax and elongate, allowing the breath to get deep.  Just take a couple of deep breaths and noticing any tension on the shoulder, face, back, or legs. Breathing-in and letting it release. (pause)

Breathing-in cool air allowing it to fill and invigorate, aliven and awaken. (pause)

Breath-out release any stale, used up, tension and stress (pause)

Our in-breath has the beginning, middle and an end. (pause)

Our out-breath has the beginning, middle and an end. (pause)

Every breath is the cycle of birth and death. (pause)

Every breath is the cycle of the beginning, middle, and an end. An arising something that is known and watching it dissolve. (pause)

And we can notice with the arising there is an uplift and a joy.

And we can notice when the breath is in the middle there is a steadiness and comfort.

And we can notice when we are breathing-out there is quietness, letting go, stillness, there is not whole lot to cling to. (pause)

And this way the breath is the perfect metaphor for life. (pause)
