Ash Wednesday — 2018 — Valentine’s Day

Somehow it feels unfair for Valentine’s Day to fall on Ash Wednesday doesn’t it? What are you giving up for Lent — Chocolate, Champagne, Going out to eat?

Just when you want to dive in to the box of Russell Stover Turtles your loved one gave you or she/he returned, it’s Ash Wednesday. Thank goodness that the Banana and Blueberry Pancakes Jeremy made last night will carry me through this first round of temptation to fudge on my lenten discipline. Did I just say Fudge?

Followers of the Pew know that I believe Lent is not about giving up as much as it is taking on. Taking on a service to your neighbor, taking on a new spiritual discipline such as reading the Bible daily or spiritual writings, taking on a new physical discipline such as an exercise program or writing notes to friends. This list is a mile long, but whatever one gives up and/or takes on during Lent it is about improvement of mind, body, and/or soul so we can better serve God.

The Hubbell Pew began as a Lenten discipline because I was an absolute failure at giving up oatmeal-raisin cookies, the absolute Achilles heal in my diet attempts. So the Lenten season is special for me and I hope you as well. So join with the Pew, your family, and your neighbors in making these next days special. Whether you are successful or not with your discipline and plans, I can guarantee the journey is going to be one heck of a ride!
