Pent-Up Stream

… (s)he will come like a pent-up stream that the wind of the Lord drives on. — Isaiah 59:19.

If you’ve been in the NC mountains you understand the image of a pent-up stream. It is one of mother nature’s most beautiful sights and one of its most powerful.

Suzy and I had a dear friend, Jill, who died yesterday. If I were asked to describe her, “a pent-up stream” would be a good description. She was beautiful and a force of nature when it came to being a wife, parent, a loving friend, and an advocate for women and women’s health in particular. She was a class act in everything she did. Tens of thousands of women in the south are safer, healthier, and better off because of her dogged advocacy. I could go on and on about her accomplishments and her efforts to improve our world but I will leave that to others who will wax much more eloquently.

This morning I ask how do I honor such a dear friend? I believe she would say to continue to break down the dams that hold back women whether it be in the home, workplace, or in healthcare. She would hope that the pent-up stream becomes a mighty river that flows free and wild much like she lived. Godspeed Jill.
