Trust Your Instincts

A good friend and I were exchanging emails about the economy when he told me that Truman had said, “when all the liberals are in one party and all the conservatives in the other, the legislative branch would cease to function.”  Now, no this blog won’t be about politics, but Bill’s email got me thinking about how our nation’s leadership has changed and why. Growing up, the country had conservative and liberal democrats and so did the Republicans. It was all about the individual and not the party. Senators and congressmen were counted on for individual votes of conscience and philosophy. I have to admit one of the biggest shocks when I went to DC was the strict adherence and importance of political parties and it got a whole lot worse.

I have some idea of the causes of this tribalism, but I write to remind us all that God gave us each a conscience and an innate sense of right and wrong. Herd mentality has created tragedy after tragedy beginning with the Israelites worshiping a golden calf, the mob calling for Christ to be crucified, and a hundred other examples including the Holocaust. When we forget or fail to listen to our individual sense of right and wrong, we start down the path to ruin.

Group think is mindless. God gave us each a mind and a soul for a reason.
