You are all probably familiar with the commercial where the announcer says, “What’s in your wallet?” Well, What’s in your vocabulary?
“Is the air around us vibrant with such words as ‘freedom,’ ‘love,’ ‘success.’ ‘beauty,’ and ‘happiness.’ A wealth of such words spoken morning and night is a mental medicine-chest of incalculable value. It tunes the spirit to the right key. Instinctively we become positive and effective through their influence.
Before the SAT exams teenagers walk around with vocabulary cards trying to improve their knowledge of words they will never use. People will underline words in books that they don’t understand, and later look them up in a dictionary. Perhaps, we should be more conscious of the descriptive words that make up our daily conversation.
Dear Webb,
I very much enjoyed this posting. Our teachers tell us that ALL of our thoughts, words and actions are forms of prayers. Further, we attract more of what we put out there… so if we tend to be unhappy a lot, we attract more situations that will reinforce unhappiness. So in many ways, we manifest that which we speak of. Our vocabulary and how we use it is indeed of high importance!
