Advent 6

About this time of year I go out of  control. I get so much joy out of giving presents to my friends, family, and Suzy I have to reign myself in. Its nice to not need anything, and my wants are so outrageous that no one takes me seriously — really a pick-up truck? God gave us a great gift — the joy of giving and we shouldn’t take it for granted. It is a whole lot better than receiving.

I envy those people who have the ability to pass out $100 bills to strangers, buy a family a shopping cart of toys, or make a significant gift to charity. How much fun that must be.

Wisdom has taught me several things about giving that I pass on: 1.) Give without expectation — of receiving something in return, even a thank you. A no strings attached gift is as wonderful as the unconditional love of God. 2.) Gifts to strangers bring a special joy. 3.) Anonymous giving brings unique pleasure. 4.) No matter what our economic status we all have something to give, especially of ourselves.

Now its your turn. Meditate, discuss with your family, or write a comment in this blog about what wisdom has taught you about giving.
