Friday In the Fifth Week of Lent

“When you encounter difficulties and contradictions, do not try to break them,
but bend them with gentleness and time.” — Saint Francis de Sales

Don’t you love the image of bending your problems and difficulties “with gentleness and time.”
Often we face adversity with a sense of urgency believing the current problem has to be resolved immediately. In reality, most problems that seem impossible to overcome go away with time, and even if they don’t, become solvable if we allow time to be our biggest ally.
The same goes with gentleness. All of us who have raised children know that you catch more flies with honey. A gentle reaction to outrageous behavior is always the best.
Our Lenten discipline gives us the tools to bend any difficulty “with gentleness and time.”
