January 19

Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. — Mark 3:35.

January 19 is the birthday of both Martin Luther King and Robert E. Lee. Before the nineteenth became a national holiday called MLK Day, in many southern states the nineteenth was a state holiday honoring Robert E. Lee. In some states, for the longest time, both birthdays were celebrated. Those days are gone, and there are many who are offended by the lumping of the two together or even honoring Robert E. Lee. I also remember a time when the honoring of MLK was opposed by many. Times and perceptions change.

I give you this little bit of history to remind myself of Mark’s gospel.
