Quick To Listen

… let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger…. — James 1:19…

This famous verse is not just about holding one’s tongue or anger. The author’s order of suggestions gives us a hint about what virtue he thinks is the most important — “be quick to listen.” In these days of shouting and anger, we are reminded to first be quick to listen and to hold our tongue and anger in check. If my grandchildren were to ask for one bit of advice I would talk to them about the benefits of listening.
