Just when we are getting comfortable in our Lenten discipline, we are cautioned that we walk a fine line. While we seek God through prayer, meditation, and fasting we must avoid the idea that we can control God – domesticate God to our own use. I find myself doing that. In trying to get close to God, I want him to see thing my way. I want my needs to become his. I want him to solve my problems. I want him to make my life better and easier. I end up talking to God like I would a child urging God to behave in the way I want.
Our Lenten spiritual practice helps us live in and understand the tension where God is accessible yet outside of our control. We all want to create a spiritual environment where we can experience God deeply and regularly. But we must never believe we have the power to tame God.
God, give us wisdom to nurture
Our relationship with you
While honoring your sovereignty.
