Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feeble-minded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. – 1 Thess. 5:14.
The little worries which we meet each day
May lie as stumbling-blocks across the way,
Or we may make them stepping stones to be
Of grace, Oh Lord. To Thee – A.E. Hamilton
During Lent we practice sacrificing our will, as opportunity serves, to the will of others. We try to ignore sights and sounds that annoy us; instead setting about serving others over their din. We serve when we’d much rather be doing anything else but. We keep company, when it would be a great joy to us to be by ourselves. We overcome trifling untoward accidents of life, bodily pain, and weakness to serve someone who does not appreciate our sacrifice. We lose what we value, miss what we desire, are disappointed in others, and we encounter will fullness, unkindness, ingratitude, and folly – Why?
It is those “little worries,” those “petty annoyances,” and those “minor disappointments” with those we serve that become “stepping-stones to the grace of God.” Don’t let them trip you up, instead look upon them as the pathway to Heaven.
