I recently read an article asking what does it mean to “make straight in the desert a highway for our Lord.” ( Isaiah 40:3). I first wondered what the original hebrew word for highway was uttered by old Isaiah — surely they didn’t have highways 3000 years ago, but probably I’m just being picky.
My vision of a desert is lots of sand, winds blowing it all over and unless one’s camel knows where its going I would be lost in a matter of minutes. It would be helpful to have a marked path, a gravel stretch, or a modern highway that I could follow straight to where I should go. Maybe that was what Isaiah was talking about in the desert of our existence without God — without love, make a direct beeline, do not pass “Go”, do not collect $200, to God and mark it well so you don’t get lost again and so others can follow suit.
Perhaps, Isaiah emplores us to lead the way to God by example, by laying a firm foundation so friends and family can travel to God more easily, and building this highway without curves and detours.
As we begin our preparation, as we begin again our journey to God, its a good thing to ask 1.) Is your life a desert? 2.) What is keeping you from heading on a straight line to God? — demands of others, a broken relationship, a continued looking over your shoulder towards the past?, and 3.) Where do you get the materials to build a highway that others can easily follow?
Have a great week!
