Appreciate

I deeply appreciate the many different people I encounter. The word ‘appreciate’ perfectly captures the sentiment I feel, and a recent experience with a new friend solidified this feeling.

The other morning, we had the privilege of meeting a new friend who has been courageously battling a neurological disease for over a decade. Despite his physical challenges, his spirit remains vibrant and his humor sharp. He exuded a positive outlook on life, a dedication to his work, and a remarkable grace in navigating the unexpected physical limitations that occasionally arose.

Rather than bitterness or resentment, he embodied a resilience that was truly inspiring. As Suzy and he talked, I found myself captivated by his strength of character. Though I wanted to contribute to the conversation, my admiration for him took precedence and I found myself mostly listening.

We all face challenges as we age, but few confront them with such grace and unwavering courage. I hope to have the opportunity to spend more time with him, to learn from his example, and to internalize his positive outlook. Perhaps a small part of his extraordinary spirit will rub off on me.
