The Big Two

You search the scriptures, because you think in them you have eternal life; …. — John 5:39.

John 5:39 speaks of those who search the scriptures, thinking they hold eternal life. In our Lenten journey, it’s easy to get caught up in the ‘doing’ – the sacrifices, the studies, the services. But the true essence of Lent lies in the heart’s direction. When we ground ourselves in the two great commandments, to love God and love our neighbors, the practices of Lent become less a burden and more a natural expression of our devotion. Like a seasoned athlete trusting their instincts, we can learn to trust the simple truth: Love is the compass that guides us. When we feel lost, returning to these basics can reorient us, making the path to God clear.
